Backpacking in Badger creek wilderness

My friend Mark and I spent a few nights in the Badger Creek Wilderness last week. We camped near an old cabin and mine. We spent one night camped next to the Deschutes River and stopped to check out the abandoned White rive head house on our way home. Here is a video I made of the trip.

My oldest son, my brother in law and I spent 3 days backpacking in the Five Lakes Basin in the Tahoe National Forest. The road into the trail head would be enough to discourage most people but the views were worth it. Here is a link to a video I made of our trip.

Backpacking in the Five Lakes Basin

Spectacular views and perfect weather.  Just enough wind to keep the mosquitos away.

Redwood Highway Ride

My plan was to ride south from Crescent City and take Highway 299 inland toward Graeagle Ca where I am at a family reunion. After checking the California fire map, I decided to take the Redwood Highway California 199 instead, after riding through heavy smoke last year near Susanville. Here is a video I made of the ride.

Back in the 70s I used to ride my Honda CL350 down to Corvallis to visit friends that were in college there and then ride over to the coast on highway 34. It's still one of the nicest motorcycle roads I know of. This is the way I went to the coast on my way to California. Here is a link to a short (not the whole 65 miles) video of the ride.

Gold Lake California

Blessedly clear of smoke unlike the ride from Crescent City to Graeagle.

Hiking in the Redwoods

These big trees are still as spectacular as I remember them. One of my favorite places in the world. Jeremiah Smith Redwoods.

Parked along the Sothern Oregon coastline

I have gotten so used to trying to stay cool the last few months of riding that it was a surprise to have it so cool and cloudy as I rode down the coast today.

Westport ferry

Almost as many bikes on the ferry as there were cars today going from Westport to Puget Island.

One of the reasons that I went down to California was to see the Dead play one of their last shows together on June 28th in Santa Clara. The show had some real highlights including Wharf Rat and Sugar Magnolia. Here is a video I made of the show, lots of longer ones on line.

Mt. Lassen

Mt. Lassen erupted 100 years ago this past May. Elmer Sorahan was awoken by his dog and saw the mud flow from the eruption outside his cabin. He ran 3 miles to warn his neighbors which saved many lives even though 6 homesteads were destroyed. He gets points for being a dog owner and for being able to run 3 miles.

Because they haven’t perfected smell-o-vision yet, you will have to use your imagination.

The reason that I am using a link to you tube is that video uploaded to the blog take forever (longer than I am willing to wait) and then looks like crap.

Mt. Lassen is a great place to visit with lots of interesting things to see. I will upload more over the next day or so. Even though it is between 7000 and 8000 feet and cooled off nicely at night, it still was real hot in the afternoons as California is going through a heat wave right now.

BUMPASS HELL

Strong sulfur smell and lots of heat.

Spent the last few days at the Oregon Coast in Wheeler. Had a great time and the weather was Oregon coast perfect (anything but rain) with mid 60s temps ant quite a bit of wind. It sure beats Portland in the mid 80s today.

My bike parked at Dahlia

I have enjoyed reading a few people's blogs as they travel on their bikes and as I have a trip planned to California at the end of June I am starting a travel blog of my own. Feel free to add suggestions or comments.
